As anyone reading this blog for any length of time will be able to tell, I'm not a sports person. I don't talk about sports that often. But I have to now. The New Orleans Saints are in the second round of the playoffs, tonight they play the Philiadelphia Eagles in the Superdome. Anyone that has ever followed football, and even a lot of you that haven't, will know how bad the Saints have done over their history. After Katrina the owner Tom Benson wanted to try and move the Saints, something he's been wanting to do for years anyway. The NFL stepped up and refused to let him move the team.
As terrible as the Saints have done over the years the one constant has been this city's support of the team. They have been the "Aint's" and the bags over the head, but this city has stood by a team that has not been much of a winner.
Until now. Now the Saints are winning. And after Katrina it is a boost the city needs. It provides morale to those that are still living in fema trailers. Sports should be about rooting for the underdog, it should be about making people feel good about the sport, it should be about doing the impossible...forget all the crap about money and drugs and everything that we see sports is about but shouldn't be.
The Saints are reminding the world what sports are really about. The determination to win. The underdog coming out on top. The thrill it gives fans to watch a game.
This city is going crazy. Today is black and gold day. Everyone you see will be wearing Saints colors.
Tonight the Saints have the chance to do the impossible, to do what they have never done before and advance to the next round in the playoffs.
For a few hours the Saints will make us forget about the crime in the city, the insurance checks not here yet, living in a fema trailer, the destruction we still see when we drive down the interstate....all that will be forgotten for a few hours while the Saints play.
You can't ask for much more than that.
