In my review of the best tv shows of 2006 I put this show on the bottom of the list and basically said it just made the list. Well, I purchased the DVD collection of the first season, can't help it when they put these things on sale, and am just about finished watching it.
I find I like it a lot more than I did at first. I never saw all the episodes before and not in any type of order, so watching the storyline move from point A to point B was refreshing. And the characters have grown on me.
I still think they have a big problem down the line. They've made Robin the character that Ted (he is the I in the title) is head over heels in love with, she is his soul mate. They've made her his Rachel to his Ross. But they've also made it clear that she is not the Mother in the title. So where do they go from here. In the second season they have Ted and Robin together, so I'm assuming by the end of this season they'll break up and he'll continue to go on his hunt for the perfect woman and the mother in the title. But after such a build up of Robin for him, it's going to be hard. I haven't seen much of the second season yet, but putting Robin and Ted together would seem to throw off the dynamic of the show.
The first season set up the Robin and Ted situation so strongly that I don't know if I'm going to believe anything after that. We'll have to see. It's going to give them some problems I think in the future.
But as far as the first season goes I really like it. There's not a lot of sitcoms out there I watch right now....ok, maybe none on a regular basis, so it's nice to find one that I like. In some ways it reminds me of Friends, in that it's just a story about a group of friends trying to live their life. Nothing out of the ordinary, just day to day life.
And it's got Willow from Buffy in it!
