No Depression
Ok, this may actually be one of the worst names for a magazine. It is not a medical journal which it sounds like. If you're a fan of the Carter Family or Uncle Tupelo you may know what the name refers to. (An early Carter Family song title that was remade by the Americana group Uncle Tupelo years later.) But for someone that is just looking at the magazine rack I can't imagine that this names screams "Music Magazine!"
Still all that said, this is probably the best music magazine out there today. It's byline reads "Surveying the past, present and future of American Music." And that's exactly what it does. It started off as magazine about Americana music and has moved into a wider range of subjects.
The new issue cover features Lucinda Williams and has articles about Joan Osborne, soul singer Howard Tate, Eleni Mandell, Bonnie Guitar and a bunch of others. The articles are always well written and thoughtful. They take their time with the articles and are not just a two page puff piece.
They don't cover the hot new thing. They talk about the musicians you won't see on the cover of Rolling Stone or Entertainment Weekly. Their focus is mainly on Americana or country, but they look at a wider range of music also.
They have a section that reviews concerts as well as one of the better cd review section.
If you want a magazine about music, if you want to discover some new singers, open your ears to some new sounds, try this magazine out...

Last month, or it might have been the month before I'll have to check it out, I'm on my lunch hour right now, they had a good article about Springsteen's Jazz Fest show. Very good. They've been talking a lot about the New Orlean's situation with musicians since the storm. They did a very good roundup not long after the storm on what was going on musically in the city.
