Mardi Gras Parade
Some pictures from the parade last night. Sorry they aren't all that great, I'm not sure if it was me or the new camera or just being night with a lot of lights coming off the floats, but I wanted to at least give an impression of what the parade was like:
Uptown Remnants
This is, or was a Copelands Uptown off of Napolean street. Now Uptown is the classy neighborhood in New Orleans. This is the area that Anne Rice used to live, this is where all the rich people live. And still left overs from Katrina.

WORD A DAY
LOTUSLAND: 1: a place inducing contentment especially by offering an idyllic living situation 2: a state or an ideal marked by indolent self-indulgence
In the Odyssey, Odysseus and his men discover a magical land of lotus-eaters. Some of the sailors eat the delicious lotus and forget about their homeland, pleading to stay forever in this "lotusland." (It is likely that the lotus in question was fruit of a real plant of the buckthorn family, perhaps the jujube, whose sweet juice is used in candy making and which has given its name to a popular fruity candy.) The label "lotusland" is now applied to any place resembling such an ideal perfection, but it also carries connotations of indolence and self-indulgence, possibly derived from the way the sailors refused to work once they reached the original lotusland. The dreamy unreality of a lotusland may make it a nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.

It's Late But I'm Happy
I was going to try to post some pictures I took from the parade tonight, but blogger doesn't want to cooperate and it's almost 2:30 in the a.m. so I think I'll wait and do that another day.
I just want to say the concert was great. Shannon was amazing. And Shannon hugged me....so I'm happy!

Barack Obama Makes it Offical

Barack Obama, the Senator from Illinois, has made it official and declared his candidacy for the President. I've liked what I've seen about him, but to be honest I don't know a whole lot yet. I'm going to have to read up some more on him. I'm glad to see some fresh new faces in the Democratic party leadership....but and I hate to say this, I really do, I'm not sure if this country would elect a black man President. I'm not saying we shouldn't. I would have no problem voting for Mr. Obama, but I'm talking about the rest of the country. The same way I'm not sure if we'd elect a woman President. Two of the front runners for the Democrat party and I think they have bigger problems than just the issues. There are a lot of people that just won't vote for certain people, not because of their issues, but because of their race or gender. I would really love to be wrong on this one.
Odd Couple Coming

April 24 the first season of the Odd Couple comes out on DVD. This is a classic televsion series. Tony Randall and Jack Klugman were perfect in their roles of Oscar and Felix. This is one of those shows, like Happy Days, that I've probably seen a thousand times but that I'm still going to have to buy.

WORD A DAY
GRUDGING: 1: unwilling, reluctant 2: done, given, or allowed unwilling, reluctantly, or sparingly
More than 500 years have passed since English jurist Sir John Fortescue observed that some people "obtayne gretter rewardis than thei have disserved, and yet grugge, seying they have (too) litill." Fortescue's "grugge" (an early spelling of the verb "grudge") meant "to grumble and complain," just like its Middle English forerunner, gruccen, and the Anglo-French grucer that gave rise to the English forms. English-speakers had adopted the "complaining" sense of "grudge" by the late 1400s and by 1500 they had added the extended sense "reluctant." That second sense may have developed because people associated "grudge" with the related word "begrudge" (meaning "to give reluctantly"). "Grudging," which developed from "grudge," made its English debut around 1533.

Tonight is not just Shannon McNally
Tonight was supposed to be Shannon McNally at Tipitina's. She is playing there, but it's actually a cd release for a group called Tishamingo. They're a southern rock band from Athens Georgia. Before this I had never heard of them, I just did a little research on the internet to find some information out. There is also a group called Bluegrass Underground there tonight too. So it should be an interesting night, I get to listen to Shannon and hear some new groups.

New Artist: Alexa Ray Joel
The daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley. She's not signed to a major label yet, but that's only a matter of time. I'm sure having these two for parents won't hurt her chances, but even without them she should be signed. She is good. She's released an ep of songs called Sketches that she sells at her shows and at Target. I picked it up at Target, not really knowing what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised. She has a nice singing voice and her songs are good. She writes her own material and of course it's heavily piano driven, being who her father is. She calls her music "pop/soul/blues" and I would consider it be more pop oriented, which isn't a bad thing. She has a myspace page where you can go check out her music.
She's playing this year at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which means I will have a chance to catch her live.
Some artists you listen to once and than put away, to maybe pull out and listen to every now and than. I've found myself listening to her over and over.
The Fittest City in the USA
I know New Orleans isn't going to be in the top ten on that list. The number one for the fittest city in the country according to Mens Fitness magazine is Albuquerque, New Mexico. Seattle came in at number two.
Now the list for the 10 fattest cities I can imagine New Orleans making that list, but we didn't. The fattest city in the country was Las Vegas. Number 2 was San Antinio Texas. New Orleans wasn't anywhere on the list.

Death of A....
Over the last day the media has made it seem like a President died. One news commentator even said it was a tragedy for America. I'm sorry, Anna Nicole Smith's death is a tragedy for her friends and family, but that's where it should end. It is not a tragedy for America. She was famous for being famous. Like so many of our celebrities nowdays that seem to have accomplished nothing for their fame except the fame itself.
I feel sorry for her child that will now not know her/his (I don't know if the child is a boy or girl) mother. I feel sorry for her Mother who has lost her child. A parent outliving a child is hard. I feel sorry for her husband/boyfriend who has lost a lover, a friend. But that's about where my sympathy ends. I feel like she's gotten more press coverage than the death of Gerald Ford. And say what you want about Mr. Ford, he was a former President of this country and his actions created history. Her actions created tabolid televison.
We can blame the meida, they're the ones creating the headlines and the stories about her death. But they wouldn't be giving it to us if we weren't listening and buying into it.

WORD A DAY
DISINGENUOS: lacking in candor, also: giving a false appearance of simple frankness: calculating
Today's word has its roots in the slaveholding society of ancient Rome. Its ancestor ingenuus is a Latin adjective meaning "native" or "freeborn" (itself from gignere, "to beget"). Ingenuus begot the English "ingenuous." That adjective originally meant "freeborn" (as in "ingenuous Roman subject") or "noble and honorable," but it eventually came to mean "showing childlike innocence" or "lacking guile." In the mid-17th century, English-speakers combined the negative prefix "dis-" with "ingenuous" to create "disingenuous," meaning "guileful" or "deceitful."

Thursday Thirteen #14: Secret Societies
![]() |
This week's thirteen is the secret societies that actually rule our world. I got the 13 from a selection from the Secret Societies Handbook by Michael Bradley. 1. The Order of Skull and Bones - founded in 1832 at Yale University by William H. Russell and 14 other under graduates. Some believe the skull and bones to be the American chapter of the Illuminati. George Bush and his son George W. Bush were members. So was the junior Bush's opponent in the last Presidental election, John Kerry. 2. The Priory of Sion - this society has gotten a lot more press due to the DaVinici Code. The Society was founded in 1090 by Godfroi de Bouillon, a French nobleman. The Sion are the defenders of the bloodline of Jesus Christ, who according to them did not die on the cross but went on to father a son and start the bloodline they protect today. 3. The Bilderbergs - Not names after any one person, this group was named after the hotel in Oosterbeek, Holland where they met in the 1950s. Offically it doesn't exist. It's members consist of the most powerful men and women in the world. The leaders are the Rockerfeller family and the Rothschilds. Every year they met for four days in a secret location and basically plan the fate of the world to come. 4. The Club of Rome - Founded in 1968 by Italian Aurelio Peccei. It has ties to the World Bank, the International Monetray Fund and the ruling elite. In 1972 it pubished a book The Limits to Growth that became a worldwide bestseller. It also led to some to believe that the group was responsible for the spread of AIDS. 5.Council on Foreign Relations - Thought to be the worlds biggest globalist secret society. Started by President Woodrow Wilson and his advisor Colonel Edward Mandell House. United States foreign policy does not get made without approval from the CFR. Every Presidental organization since Woodraw Wilson has had memmbers of the CFR in its group. 6. Freemasonary - No secret society can be mentioned without talking about the Freemasons. Their secret hand is supposed to be in almost any conspiracy. Masons were skilled stone cutters and they created a guild to hand down their secret methods of work. They trace their linkage back to the knights of the Crusades. Half the Founding Fathers were Freemasons. The eye above the pyramid is a Freemason symbol. 7. The Illuminati - The most powerful secret society. It was founded by Dr. Adam Weishaupt to fight religion and create a one world government. Today it is supposedly run by the Rothschilds. 8. Knights Templars - founded in 1118 in Jerusalem by nine French knights. They grew to be a powerful force in the world, second only to the Catholic church and supposedly that worried the church which in the end brought about their destruction. But their is word that the Templars survived and still flourishes today. 9. Majestic-12 - Founded in the 1940s by President Truman to hide the fact that our planet has been visited by aliens from outer space. 10. Opus Dei - A secret societ that exists within the Catholic Church. It was founded in 1928 b Spanish priest Josemaria Escriva. This group exists to gather power and money for the church. 11. The Bohemian Club - founded in 1872 as a males only drinking club it has become one of the most prestigious societies in the United States today. Every Republican President since Hoover has been a member. Every fall the group meets outside San Francisco at its 2700 acre ranch. 12. The Round Table - founded by Cecil Rhodes, he is also the founder of de Beers Mines, which controls 90% of the worlds diamond production. He was a white supremacist. He created the Rhodes scholarship where Americans are picked to go to Oxford University in England. Bill Clinton is the most well known Rhodes scholar today. The Round Table has connections to the Illumanti and their desire to create a one world government. 13. Trilateral Commission - formed in 1973 by some of the richest and most powerful men in the world, all hand picked by David Rockerfeller. Like many of these other secret socities its aim is a one world government controlled by the men that run this organization. |

WORD A DAY
GAMBIT: 1: a chess opening in which a player risks one or more minor pieces to gain an advantage in position 2: a remark intended to start a conversaion 3: A calculated move
A chess handbook published in 1656 was said to have almost a hundred illustrated "gambetts." That early spelling of "gambit" is close to the Italian word gambetto, from which it is derived. Gambetto was used for an act of tripping - especially one that gave an advantage, as in wrestling. The original chess gambit is an opening in which a bishop's pawn is sacrificed to gain some advantage, but the name is now applied to many other chess openings. After being pinned down to chess for about two centuries, "gambit" finally broke free of the hold and showed itself to be a legitimate contender in the English language by weighing in with other meanings.

Missed It!
In an earlier post I was talking about Lost coming back on tonight with its first new episode in over a month. And that I was excited to be seeing it. Do I need to tell you where I'm going with this. Yep, that's right. I watched about the first half of it and than I got a phone call I had to take. Missed the entire last half of the show.
Dumb Me
This post is about two dumb people. One is me and the other is a customer that was in our store today. They're actually tied together.
I was cleaning out the electrical room in our warehouse today. To try and speed things up I decided to use a leaf blower to get rid of the dust. I thought it was a good idea at the time, really I did. In the electrical room are the controls for the fire alarm for the store. I turned on the blower and was going to town. When I turned it off and turned around I noticed all the lights blinking off and on and than I heard the alarm going off. Somehow I had set the first alarm off. I think all the dust must have done it.
Ok, now that wasn't the smartest thing I admit.
But when the alarm went off the managers on the store made an announcement for everyone to evacuate the store. Which was the smart thing to do, they didn't know what was going on. Well we had a customer at the return desk wanting to return something. The alarm was going off, they had paged for everyone to leave and she was arguing with the associate to try and get them to do her return before they left. She had to be somewhere she said.
Now this lady didn't know if there was a fire or not. But she had to have her return done right there and right at that moment. Do I need to say anymore?

Thinking about doing this blogging thing for two years now I was looking back at some of my old posts. Lately because of what's been going on I've been talking a lot about my Dad, but I don't want to forget my Mom. This is a post I wrote about her on Mother's Day.
More Upcoming Concerts
I just got an email from House of Blues listing new shows. Some good ones are coming.
One that I missed before that is coming on the 18th of this month is Old Crow Medicine Show. I'd like to see them, but not sure if I'm off or what since I waited this long.
Lily Allen is on March 17, but that's only a few days after I see Taylor Hicks. Lily Allen is supposed to be one of the new big things. Her cd was voted by a lot of critics from 2006 as one of the best of the year.
On April 1 Josh Hoge is playing. Yes, he's Wills' brother. Their music isn't that similar so I'm not sure if I really want to see him or not. He's more pop/dance oriented.
Buddy Guy is April 27 and he would be great to see, but he's a little on the expensive side.
April 28 is Lucinda Williams and this is one I will attend. Last year I waited too long to get tickets for her and they were sold out. Lucinda Williams is one of my favorite performers so I plan to make it point to see her.
That's if so far. A few I'd like to see, but only one that I have to see.

Another Idol On Vinyl...eh, plastic or whatever those cd things are made of...
Anyone remember Bucky Covington from last year's American Idol. He was one of the first to get booted from the final 12. On April 17 he's releasing his self titled cd. His single A Different World is out and rising on the country charts. I don't listen to much country radio so I haven't heard it. I'm just wondering how many of the 12 from last year's American Idol are going to have their own recording career?
So far there's been Taylor, Chris, Katherine, Kellie and now Bucky. I've also read that Paris has a cd coming out eventually. That's half of the final 12. That seems like a lot to me, compared to previous years.
Until last year I never really followed American Idol so I'm not sure if this is a record for the show or not, has there been that many runner ups to get their own records from other years?

Manhunt
I just bought this book today and started reading it. It tells the story of John Wilkes Booth assassination of Abraham Lincoln and his flight to escape justice. It looks like an interesting book. I'm in the middle of reading Team of Rivals also, another book about Lincoln and the men that surrounded him. This is an excellent book. I've already learned something from Manhunt,I didn't realize that Booth was a famous actor and that his family were the Barrymores of their day. I knew Booth was an actor, but I always assumed he wasn't that well known.
I think this is going to be a fascinating book.
LOST Returns
Tonight Lost comes back on the air after a month or so hiatus. This can be one of the best shows on tv and one of the most frustrating. They keep piling on mystery after msytery till you have to start worrying that they aren't going to be able to pull it all together. The creators are trying to get the network to agree to an ending date, so they have an end in site. This will give them something to work towards.
What Day Is It?
For some reason I keep thinking today is Monday. It's not. Right? It's Wednesday.....right? Why I keep thinking it's Monday I have no idea, but I do.

WORD A DAY
RAREFIED: 1: of, relating to, or interesting to a select group; esoteric 2: very high
"Rarefied" was formed from the verb "rarefy," which derives from a combination of the Latin rarus ("thin" or "rare") with facere ("to make" and has meant "to make thin" since the 14th century. In its original uses back in the 1600s, the adjective "rarefied" was on the lean side, too; it meant "made less dense" (as in "the fog lifted and we could breathe more easily in the rarefied air"). By the 16th century, "rarefy" had gained the sense "to refine or purify." Over time, "rarefied" followed suit, by the 1940s, it was being used to mean "only for the select."

Happy Days Are Coming Again
April 17 sees the release of the second season of Happy Days. The first season came out years ago. It was one of those shows that I thought would never be completed on DVD. But they are finally coming out with the second season, hopefully to be followed shortly by the third and fourth and....Now this was my favorite show as a kid. I remember making sure I was always home at seven o'clock on Tuesday night to watch the adventures of Richie and Fonzie. The friendship between these two characters are what drove the show for me.
I hope that this isn't a blip and that they continue to collect the entire series on DVD.
The Last of Northern Exposure
On March 6 the final season of Northern Exposure comes out on DVD. This was one of the best shows that ever appeared on television. The last season went out with a sigh, not a bang. The actor playing Joel, the doctor from the series was leaving the show to go on to a movie career. You all know the great movie career Rob Morrow had, right? He's back on tv now, playing in Numbers. So they brought in a new doctor. This last season had a lot of characters acting out of character and was not up to the caliber of the previous five seasons. There were some good individual episodes though and the series finale was good. I remember the final minutes of the show with the song "My Town" by Iris Dement playing...it was moving. Anyone Remember This Show?
Does anyone remember this show? I remember it coming out when I was a kid. I seem to remember that this was supposed to be a big show at the time it came out. One of the stars was killed in an accident if I remember right. It only lasted two seasons. It comes out next week on DVD. I might have to pick it up and see if I remember it.
Spice Up Your Page With Cool Fonts

Sometimes it can get boring using just the same font for every post. Blogger only give you so many choices to make as far as a selection from fonts go and none of them are that different from each other. As you can tell from the titles to some of my features I like to spice it up and use some different fonts. If I can figure out how to put fonts on here, anyone can.
So if you want to use some different fonts where do you go to get them? How do you get them? You could go to the computer store and buy one of those programs that list all these different types of fonts to download. Or you could Download Free Fonts.

So if you want to use some different fonts where do you go to get them? How do you get them? You could go to the computer store and buy one of those programs that list all these different types of fonts to download. Or you could Download Free Fonts.

Check out some of the different fonts I've used for the titles of some of my features:

Anniversary Coming Up
Feb 12, 2005 was the first post I made on this blog. It was actually a simple post, a picture of me. I was going to link back to it, but it's the same picture I used on my first Manic Monday post recently so decided that was enough. So I'm coming up to the start of my third year on here. Wow....it doesn't seem that long ago.
I can say it's been fun and I've made some really good friends on here. My first two years I would blog off and on, some months I would blog heavily and than other months would go by with just barely a few posts from me at all. This year I have started blogging with a passion and so far have kept it up. We'll see how it goes.
I may post some more about things from the past two years, but right now I have a cold. I worked overnight last night, got home early actually, around four in the a.m. and went to bed and woke up around nine this morning. I woke up barely able to breathe and feeling like crap.
So I think I'm off to shower, eat and watch Veronica Mars on tv tonight.

What's In Store For Harry Potter?
This July sees the seventh and final volume of the Harry Potter series. It's billed as a children's series, but if you love a good story don't be fooled, read it. It's a great series. The author J.K. Rowling has always said that some major characters are going to die in this final book. Any thoughts on who? Or maybe she is just saying that to get everyone worried about Harry. Do you think Harry will die?
I can't wait for the book to come out.

Sore Loser
In all fairness I will admit right up front that I wasn't a big fan of her when she was on American Idol. I thought she had a decent voice, but I wasn't pulling for Katherine McPhee to win. She wouldn't have even been in my top three to win. She did two good songs on the show, Black Horse and A Cherry Tree and Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Than what does she do, the very next week she sings these two songs again in her closing segment. They were probably the two songs that got her the best praise from the judges, but to do them so soon after just singing them was a mistake I think. She did a great job on them once, she was competing with herself in this instance.
But there was something about her attitude on the show that I didn't like. Or the interviews I read while she was on the show. Now all this could just be projecting on her, I don't know her so I have no idea what she is really like. But to me she came off as a diva from the start.
Now I'm reading interviews with her where she complains about American Idol and how mean the judges were to her. Have I missed something here? Without American Idol we wouldn't even be reading an interview with her. I watched that season of American Idol and I don't think the judges were any tougher or meaner with her than they were with the other contestants. I think Simon was usually harsher with the winner Taylor than most. He just did not like Taylor most of the time.
To me that's the ulimate sour grapes. Complain about the show that made you.

Patty Griffin Sings Like An Angel
As previously noted on this blog Patty Griffin's newest cd came out today. Already the critics are piling on the praise for her new music. EW gave it an A, No Depression calls it the best album of the year.
This is her best singing she'd done yet. To me it almost has more of a jazzy feel to it than rock or folk/rock, especially the first two songs. Her voice is amazing on this album. Is it the best album of the year? That's hard to say, 2007 is still young. I'd have to guess no, I like it, but I don't think I'd rate it quite that high. Especially with Lucinda William's newest coming out next week.

If Last Sunday's SuperBowl Was The Third Most Watched Show Ever, What In The Number One?
Last Sunday's SuperBowl game between the Bears and the Colts was the third most watched U.S. telecast ever. 93 million people watched the game. The second most watched show was the 1996 SuperBowl between Dallas and Pittsburgh with 94.8 million.
So if the top two most watched shows are football games what is the most watched show? What is number one? Another football game?
Well, if you've scanned down and seen the picture below you already know the answer. The final episode of M*A*S*H drew in 106 million viewers.

WORD A DAY
WHEREWITHAL: means, resources; specifically: money
"Wherewithal" has been with us in one form or another since the 16th century. It comes from "where" and "withal" (meaning "with"), and it has been used as a conjunciton meaning "with or by means of which" and as a pronoun meaning "that with or by which." These days, however, it is almost always used as a noun referring to the means or resources at one's disposal, especially financial resources.

Rudy Declares
Today Rudolph Giuliani filed a statement of intent to run for the President of the United States. He still hasn't officially declared that he is a candidate, but like they said on the news tonight, this is a closer step in that direction. The two front runners in the Republican party at the moment are John McCain and Rudolph Giuliani. How long that will last is anyone's guess. The field is pretty wide open on both sides right now.
Grammy Nominees 2007
Next Sunday the Grammy Awards will be telecasted. Who do you think will win? Who do you want to win? I've heard the Police are going to kick the show off with a re-union, so I guess all those rumors of them getting back together this year are true. Unfortunately I have to work again this Sunday and close so I won't get home till the show is half over with, which means I will miss the Police.
Highlighted names are who I want to win. If there is no highlighted in a catergory means I have no preference. It's kind of surprising that the Dixie Chicks were put into country catergories, after the country genre pretty much black balled them. And since their new cd is nowhere near country.

FEMA in Florida
I'm glad that the people are getting help quicker and without all the red tape. So far all the news out of Florida after the tornadoes involving FEMA have been good. I'd like to think that is because FEMA has learned something since Katrina. Perhaps I shouldn't be so cynical, but I can't help but wonder if the fact that the Governor of Florida is brother to the President of the United States has anything to do with it. That couldn't be it, could it?

Manic Monday #2: Drifting
I forgot to check out what the word for this Monday was until late Saturday night. Drifting...hmmmm. A few ideas come to mind but my mind thinks of one right away, but I push it away, think of something else I say to it. I think of ideas for a story, some reason the word drifting feels like it could be used for a story. But the one idea I had for the word keeps coming back to me so I figured I would use it. It means looking at a part of my life I would rather just pretend was going great.
Drifting
Sometimes I feel like my life has been drifting with no real purpose for, well, I don't know how many years, maybe forever in some sense. This is kind of hard to explain. I'm not depressed, I don't feel like I have a bad life...it's just not the life I thought I would have.
From the earliest age I can remember I have been in love with the written word. Anything that I could read I did. One of my proudest achievments at school was when they tested us for reading comprehension and when I was in the sixth grade I was reading college level. So of course with this love of books I would want to turn that into a career. All I've ever really wanted to do was write.
I've tried. I would write stories every week, sometimes everyday. I bought Writer's Digest and all the other magazines and books that promised to help turn you into a selling writer. I would send the stories out to collect rejection letters. But it never really stopped me, I kept at it. I would have half a dozen stories out there making the rounds. As soon as a story came back I would stick it in an envelope and send it off to another magazine.
Of course at this time writing was definitely not going to provide a living for me. So I found a job. I started as a stock boy for a company called HJ Wilsons. Later Wilsons was bought out by Service Merchandise and that was where I spent the majority of my career until they went bankrupt. I'm currently working at another retailer, I don't like to use its name, just to keep it safe.
Over the years I found myself drifting away from my writing and more into the other side of my work life, retail. It was easy to drift away from the hours spent at the computer, the days when I had to say no to going out with friends because I wanted to stay home and try to finish up that new story or comic book script.
I can't look back and put my finger on any special occurence or event that triggered this drifting. It just happened. I found it easier to work a seventy hour week at work than I did to sit behind the computer screen and try to come up with a new story.
I still thought of ideas and stories. My mind would play them out daily or when I laid down to sleep. But the next day it was easier to drift away from the actual working of the story idea and go to work and do whatever was needed there.
I'm not saying that I should have ignored my work at Service to concentrate on my writing. Most writers in this country do not make a living from their work and have to have some type of other income to help pay for their writing. I've always understood this and figured that was ok. And for a long time I was able to focus on the two. I would come home from work and go straight to my computer and start work.
I've even had a small amount of success. In the early ninties I was selling some of my scripts to numerous comic book companies. There were even a few of these smaller companies that were looking at me to produce more material for them. Than the bust came and most of these companies went out of business.
And yet I found myself drifting away from writing. The last decade I have written very little. I start something and than stop. I try to find artists to work with and than never follow though. It was never one event, one thing that triggered this lessening of my writing, it was a slow and steady drift away from it.
I don't like to admit it. I keep telling myself that I am going to jump right back into the writing. And I have made some progress back that way, just not enough. That was the intital reason I started this blog, I wanted to have a place to write everyday, hoping that would get me back into the practice of sitting down and writing again. I wanted to blog about my writing, thinking maybe that would get me motivated enough to do it again. It's worked to an extent.
I think it would be easier to get back to the writing if there had been some big problem that caused me to move away from it. Than I could focus on whatever it was and work my way through it. But this gradual drifting away has made it harder, it's ingrained my life like it is now more, slowly taken the years I worked everyday on my writing and turned it into other pursuits.
Even today after working in retail for close to thiry years, having managed a store and currently a manager I don't feel like retail is my real work. I still look at this as a side job to the real one, which is writing.
So I need to take this drifting and turn it around. If I want to get back into writing I can't drift back that way. I have to struggle against the current of apathy I've created and make myself write again. If I try to drift back that way it's not going to work.
I want to stop this drifting. I want to get back to my writing. But there's only one person that can make that happen. And it's me.

WORD A DAY
VERJUICE: 1: the sour juice of crab apples or of unripe fruit (as grapes or apples); also an acid liquor made from verjuic 2: acidity of dispostiion or manner
The juice has been around for centuries and is used in Dijon mustard, but the word (a descendant of Anglo-French vert, meaning "green," and jous or jus, meaning juice) was largely forgotten by English-speakers until its "rediscvoery" in the early 1990s.

Need Information?
***************************THIS IS A PAYPERPOST AD****************************
Ever wonder about a particular subject and wanted to know more. Like for examples restaurants? How about the history? When did the first restaurant appear? Did you ever consider that restaurants serve as a community meeting place, where people can gather and meet as well as a place that provides food. I got all this information from encyclocentral.com.
Remember those big old encyclopedias from when you were a kid. Each book would cover a certain part of the alphabet. Well that's what encyclocentral.com is, but online, covering all sorts of subjects, such as Lottery.
It's fun, just go to their page and hit a letter and see what comes up. Generator Parts Service. Tommy Hilfiger.

Coat of Many Patches
When I was traveling through Europe I wanted something that would remind me of each place I visited. I could have went with coffee mugs (and I did pick up a few) but that would have gotten bulky and hard to carry before I went home. Baseball caps or shirts too, but I decided to get a patch of every place I visited. I had an idea of what to do with them afterwards.
After I got home I decided to see if I could get patches for all the states I've visited too. The internet is a wonderful tool for instances like this. A little browsing around and I was able to get all the patches I needed.
My idea was to put all these patches on a jacket. A jacket that would show all the places I've been in the world. You can't see all the patches in this picture. Most of the state patches are on the two arms. The back is full of the different countries I've been to. I have to get a patch for Mexico and add it.
I actually had it hanging in my closest and had pretty much forgotten about it until now for some reason today. I wore it to work and than decided to take a picture and share it with everyone. What do you think?
Dad's Home
I haven't posted lately about Dad. Mainly because I just didn't want to keep posting that he was in the hospital without word of what was going on. He's home now. He got to leave today. I talked to him briefly tonight, he was tired and heading for bed, but he sounded fairly good for what he's been through. I know it's a relief for my Mom too, all that going back and forth to the hospital was wearing on her. And they've had snow up there too and she doesn't like driving that much on normal days, so in the snow is enough to really get her nervous.
But he's home and I'm happy. I'm hoping that he's used up his hospital visits for awhile, he's been in and out twice just since the start of the year. Here's hoping that he doesn't see the inside of a hospital for awhile now.

It sounds like something that is on showtime late at night that you would only watch after the kiddies were safely tucked away in bed. But's it a site for blogs. It's called Spicy Page. You can go there and add your site and vote on which sites you like. Check out my sidebar and than go and vote for me. I'm just going to keep that up towards the top for a little while and than I'll probably drop it lower on the sidebar.

Ok, I actually got to see some of the Superbowl tonight. Yes I still had to work, but I spent a good part of the night in the emergency room. At work tonight one of the associates cut their arm. It wasn't a bad cut, but it was kind of deep so I figured better safe than sorry. Well, a manager has to go with them to the hospital, so I went. It was about a two and a half hour trip at the hospital. So while he was in there getting stitched up (actually they glued it together, no stitches) I was in the waiting room watching the game.
So Peyton Manning showed that he can go all the way and bring his team to the championship. I'm glad he did it, he needed to just to quiet all his critics that say he isn't as good as he is.

New Will Hoge
Will Hoge is releasing a new live cd "Again Somewhere Tomorrow" on Feb 20. His previous live cds are great. He always puts on a tremendous live show so this should be a great cd. You might have trouble finding it in stores, but go to his myspace page and you will find out how to purchase it. I can guarantee that it will be worth the money.
Upcoming Concerts
Next Saturday, Feb 10, Shannon McNally is playing at Tipitinas. This was one of the last places I saw her at and she put on a great show. Larry and I will be there for sure.
Feb 28 is Richard Thompson at the House of Blues. Haven't bought tickets yet, but am planning to. My brother says he knows someone (actually someone I used to work with years ago) who might be able to get me free tickets. That would be awesome.
March 10 Will Hoge plays the Howling Wolf. Will came through the area at the start of the month and didn't play New Orleans. I was afraid he might be skipping us, his last few shows weren't that heavily attended. I'm glad to see he hasn't forgotten about us.
Taylor Hicks will be at the House of Blues on March 14. It's a weird night for a concert, Wednesday. The more I've heard about Taylor live the more excited I'm getting to see him.
And of course on the last weekend of April and the first weekend of May is Jazz Fest.
That's what I'm planning to see so far, but there will be more as people come to the city that haven't booked yet.

ROCK N ROLL HISTORY
He was the lead singer for the group Whiskeytown before he went out on his own. In the space of one year he released three cds. Who is it?

WORD A DAY
SCINTILLATE: 1: to emit sparks: spark 2: to emit quick flashes as if throwing off sparks: sparkle
The history of "scintillate" begins with the Latin scintilla, which means "spark." "Scintilla" in turn sparked the development of the verb scintillare, meaning "to sparkle." "Scintillate" is the English version of scintillare. Though it sometimes literally means "to sparkle," it's more often used in the figurative sense "to be lively" or "to perform brillantly."

Prison Break
I just started watching season one of Prison Break a few days ago. I've watched the first four episodes so far. This is one of those shows that grows on you. At first I wasn't that intriqued, but as I continued to watch I found myself getting hooked. Michael gets himself arrested so he can help his brother, who has been framed for murdering the Vice President's brother, break out of prison. This was one of those shows when it came on last year that I never saw an episode of. It's fun watching it, one episode after the other, without having to wait each week and with no commericals. Right now I'm watching at least one episode every night or so. Like I did with Supernatural, which was a great show.Claire's Daddy
This is only going to make sense to those who have been watching Heroes. Claire the cheerleader has found her mother and we see that she has special powers too. This Monday the teaser is who is her Daddy? From what I've read her Father is already a character on the show. Any thoughts of anyone out there on who her Dad is?
Buffy The Vampire Slayer Coming Back
I'm on a Joss Whedon string, as evidenced by the next post too. Buffy only lasted seven seasons on television but season eight is coming. Season Eight will be published as a comic book and published by Dark Horse Comics. Joss is writing the first few issues and over seeing the entire series. The series is going to take off where season seven ended.
Joss Whedon Off Wonder Woman
It's fitting that this post is right before the one about a magazine called Geek Monthly, since this is really showing my geek side. Joss is the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly. Everyone knows how I feel about Buffy, so to me this guy can do very little wrong. He was supposed to write and direct the big screen version of Wonder Woman. For the past year rumors have flew over the internet and in comic book chat rooms about who would play Wonder Woman with Joss giving no hints. Well all over the internet in comic book sites is the news that Joss is off Wonder Woman. He says that the producers and he could not come to terms on what they wanted to see in the movie. They were not happy with where he was going, so now they have decided to go somewhere else.
I would have liked to see his version, but at the same time I had my doubts. Joss creates strong female leads, as evidenced by Buffy, and that was something sorely needed in a new version of Wonder Woman, but he also imbudes them with a certain snarky, pop referencial attitude that I don't think would work with Wonder Woman. I'm not saying he couldn't create a different type of female lead, but most of his fans were looking back at Buffy and hoping for a repeat with Wonder Woman. Buffy as Wonder Woman would not have worked.
Still a Joss Whedon Wonder Woman would have been interesting.

Geek Monthly

There's a new magazine out now called Geek Monthly. This is the cover to the first issue. The second issure featuring Kristen Bell of Veronica Mars is out now. This is a magazine for....can you guess, yes, the geek. It's science fiction/fantasy/tv/movies/comic books/books whatever you can think of. It hasn't won me over completely yet, it has the habit of a lot of magazines today where it skimps on real articles and uses lots of pictures. It does have some good articles. I'd like to see the review section expanded with books, movies, tv and comic books covered in every issue.
SuperBowl Tommorrow
Tommorrow is the SuperBowl. I have to work, by the time I get home it will be all over. The only good point about this is that it will probably be very slow at work. We'll have the game on so we'll be able to listen to it.
Since the Saints aren't in it I'm pulling for the Colts. Have to pull for the home town boy.

New Buffy Picture
It's been awhile since we've had a Buffy picture so I thought I'd post a new one. Seems like all she does is sleep, but at least it's not in my bed this time.
End Credit Card Debt
********************************THIS IS A PAYPERPOST AD***************************************
Credit Card debt can make life miserable. I speak from personal experience here. I'm one of those people that spends money way too easy. Credit cards make this really easy. Since I'm not really handing over cash my mind thinks I'm not really spending money. But of course credit card debt is real money. And it adds up quickly.
I don't want to use numbers here, but I have added up way too much credit card debt. Once you rack up that debt you end up just paying off the interest if you're lucky. Miss a payment and besides the added interest you get hit with late charges that just make paying off that bill even harder. Credit card companies could make their profit just off the interest most consumers pay.
If you find youself in this situation you might want to go the same route that I'm going right now. Try Credit Card Debt Consolidation. Credit Card Debtwill suck you dry. It takes a little time, but it helps you pay off those credit cards without having to declare bankruptcy.

Televsion Section Started
Ok, I've started the Televsion section in the sidebar. I don't know how far I'll get with it today, but cleaning out my bookmarks I came across a blog about television I wanted to feature. It's called By Ken Levin and it's by...well, it's by Ken Levine. Mr. Levine was one of the writers on Cheers and he helped create Frasier. In his blog he talks about his past and what he's doing now. It's an interesting blog.
The Television section is way down on the sidebar, right about the Thursday 13 Blogroll.

New Music Tipsheet
An new addition to the sidebar is the New Music Tipsheet. This is a site I've been searching for a long time. It lists all the new music coming out ahead of time. To me this is a great tool. I can see when the new music I want is scheduled to come out. Check it out and see if you see anything interesting coming out soon.
Clean Up Day
Today is clean up day around there parts. Besides running around in between trying to clean my house and do laundry (I figured out I have too many clothes. As long as I have clean clothes to wear I have a habit of not doing laundry till I have to. Now when I have to I have a HUGE pile of clothes to do) I am cleaning up my computer.
I've added the new Windows Vista program and for the most part it's pretty cool. I don't see a huge difference from XP, but it is different. The only problem so far is that it doesn't recongnize my printer/scanner. Yes, the one I just bought a few weeks ago. I emailed HP and they sent me an email on how to try and correct the problem. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, so I'm hoping that's all it will take.
I want three columns in my blog. Another blogger had made a post on how to change a two column to three and I tried, but it just didn't work. I want to keep the same basic format that I have now, just add a third column to the right of the main section. I tried a few things, but nothing worked so far.
I'm also going through my bookmarks and cleaning them up. I have a long list in my bookmarks and there is a lot in there that I never use. Or some of them I have added to my sidebar in my blog. So if it's something I haven't used in awhile it's going away.
Also it's time to clean up some of the links in the sidebar. I'm adding some new places to visit, like 2000 blogs and Fuel My Blog, to visit. I'm going to add some new links in the blogs I visit and sadly, I'm probably going to delete some of them. There are a few in the links that have not posted anything new for over half a year or more, the only reason I haven't deleted them is that they were some of the first blogs I visited and became friends with. But I just don't feel like they're coming back.
I'm adding a few new links on the sites about blogs and writer's sites and...well, probably a little something all over here and there. If I have the time I may try to add my T.V. links back. Before I switched to the newer version of Blogger I had a bunch of links to some of my favorite Television sites, you know, like Buffy and Angel and such.
There won't be major new changes around here, but if you look around you'll see a few.

Pandora Radio
I've discoverd a really cool internet radio site. It's called Pandora Internet Radio. You go to their site and you type in someone you like, say for me I typed in Wilco and it will build a radio station around similar music. You can create different stations so depending on your mood you can listen to different music. So far I've listened to Wilco, Anders Parker, Idaho and Dave Moore. You can minimize it so it sits down on your toolbar out of the way while you go about your other computer needs and listen to some great music.
ROCK N ROLL HISTORY
The BoDeans' hit song "Closer to the Fire" went to #16 on the charts in 1996 and was the theme song for what popular T.V. show?

WORD A DAY
PESTILENCE: 1: a destructive infectious quickly spreading disease; especially: bubonic plague
2: something that is destructive or pernicious
In the 14th century, the bubonic and pneumonic plagues ravaged Europe, casting the population into terror and leaving a death toll in the millions. It is easy to see why people of that grim period began using "pestilence," a derivative of pestis, the Latin word for "plague," to refer to the horrifying diseases wracking the land.

New Music: Joss Stone
In March, no exact date yet, Joss Stone releases her third cd. Her first two cds are some of my favorite music. She sings R&B and blues as if she was an older woman than her teenage years of this two albums. Her new cd she is said to be taking a step away from her signature sound, more towards hip hop beats. I'm willing to follow on where ever she goes. To me this is one of the most talented new singers out there.Friday, February 02, 2007
Say HI!
Since I won the auction at The Bestest Blog and I'm the Blog of the Month my hits have went up a lot. In the last two days I've had over two hundred viewers a day. This is a lot more than I'm used to having. So if you're new to my site take a second to stop and say hi!
Besides that reason I'm getting a lot of hits because of my posts about Taylor Hicks. Evidently he is pretty popular out there in blogland, I've had more entrances to the blog because of his post than any post I've written.

New Music: Po' Girl
On Feb 13 they are releasing their third cd, titled Vagabond Lullabies. This is a group of four ladies that play just about all sorts of instruments such as banjo, clarinet, slide guitar, piano, mandolin, wash tub bass, harmonica and a lot more. All four sing and write the songs. They music range from the blues to cajun to punk to R&B.
New Music: Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter
On Feb 6 Jesse Sykes releases her third cd. Her last cd Oh My Girl is a great cd that probably no one has ever heard of. Her voice is a deep melancholy of lost love and the emotions that bind us all together as humans. I liked her last cd enough that it is on my ipod.
New Music: Fall Out Boy
Feb 6 sees the release of Fall Out Boy's newest one. It's called Infinity On High. I discovered this band back before they became famous. I'm not claiming to be smarter than most, I picked up the first cd when I was at Hudsons, which is a store that buys merchandise from stores that had fires, hurricanes, etc and than they turn around and sell the product at lower prices. I saw a copy of Take This To Your Grave and decided to give it a try. I have to admit what got to me was the song titles. They have the best song titles. Tell That Mick He Just Made My List of Things to Do, Sending Postcards From A Planecrash...theres titles jump right out at you. Luckily the titles lived up to the music. I liked them from the first and of course had to pick up their next cd. One of my favorite song titles: I Slept With Someone From Fall Out Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me. Their new cd comes out this coming Tuesday and already I love the title of the new single, This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race.
