Jeff Tweedy Concert

Just got back from the concert. What can I say? I know I always go on about how great every concert is after I get back from it, but I have to say it again, this was an awesome show. Scott McCaughey from Minus Five was his opening act. He put on a good show, good enough that I went and bought a cd.

Jeff puts on a great show. He talks a lot inbetween songs. He had signs put up around the venue asking that people be quiet so the artist can be heard. But this was a New Orleans audience and it wasn't going to be too quiet. But Jeff seemed ready to accept it. He said he figured that he wasn't going to be able to keep this audience quiet so he was going with the flow. Jeff is a very funny guy. He made a lot of jokes inbetween his songs. I've been at very few shows where the auidence sings along to almost all the artists' songs. This was one of them. And not just the chorus, but the entire song.

For his final encore Jeff stepped away from the microphone and to the edge of the stage and without any amplifacation except his voice sang "Dreamer in my Dreams" and ended with "Acuff Rose" from his Uncle Tupelo days.

Heather wasn't familar with Jeff or Wilco but walked away from the concert a fan.

PopUp Boxes?

I had a visitor make mention of pop up boxes on my site. I'm not sure what he meant. As far I as know I don't have any popups on my site. I'm not supposed to. Is anyone else out there getting popups when they visit my site? And if so what of? I need to get them off if they're on here. I never get any when I check it out. I hate popups and definitely don't want them on my site.

Also I had another visitor say something about all the songs starting to play at one time from my New Orleans' artist page. They're not supposed to, they're set to only play if you click on them. Again anyone out there that can help me...are they starting as soon as you come on to the page?

Thanks and I'm sorry if any of this is happening and making this page a pain. If it is I'm going to try and fix it as quickly as possible.

Jeff Tweedy Tonight

Tonight at the House of Blues is Jeff Tweedy, lead singer, writer and leader of the group Wilco. Wilco is one of my favorite groups right now. Every so often Jeff goes out on a solo tour with just his guitar. That's what tonight is. I can't wait, it should be so good. I couldn't find any solo Tweedy stuff out there that I could link to, but here's a song from Wilco.

WORD A DAY

APERCU: 1: a brief survey or sketch: outline 2: an immediate impression: especially: insight

In French apercu is the past participle of the verp apercevoir ("to perceive" or "to comprehend"), which in turn comes from Latin percipere ("to perceive"). It is also a noun meaning "insight, "judgement," or "quick survey." English speakers borrowed the noun apercu, meaning and all, in the early 19th century.

Friends Still Funny

While I've been blogging I've had the tv on and a re-run of Friends came on. Now I have the entire 10 season of Friends on DVD. I've seen these shows I don't know how many times. Tonight's episode was the one where Rachel finds out that Ross was in love with her. Even as many times as I've seen it I found myself laughing out loud and at the end feeling my heart breaking when Ross gets off the plane with Julie while Rachel was waiting to tell him she wanted to try it with him. I guess that's the earmark of a great tv show, that even after you've watched it over and over you can still enjoy it.

The names highlighted in red are ones I really want to see. Plus a lot more, these were ones that just jumped out at me that I wanted to see.

Zippo

Another book I picked up today, in the bargain bin, was Zippo: An American Legend. This is just what is sounds like. The history of the Zippo lighter. It's a small book filled with a lot of pictures of the Zippo lighter. Just glancing through it I found some Zippos I want. In 1996 they issues a series of lighters with pictures of the Beatles on them. I have no use for a lighter, but I want those lighters.

The Zippo was created in 1933 by George G. Blaisdell. A few minor changes in its designs, but essentially the lighter has remained the same.

I love finding these types of books and reading about something that I might not have a lot of interest in, but learning about such a topic.

I'm Everything I'm Cracked Up To Be

1994 and a young woman who had been struggling for years in the music business is suddenly being courted by major record companies. She ends up on the cover of Billboard. Labels are offering her millions. She was the Next Big Thing. And than she wasn't. Everything I'm Cracked Up To Be is by Jen Trynin and tells her story of rags to almost riches.

I first saw this book in hardback awhile back and have been waiting for it to come out in a more affordable edition. Today I found it in trade paperback. This looks like it's going to be a real interesting read.
I got this from Marcia. W talked about our Health Care system the other night in his state of the union. If you want to know the truth about our Health Care System and how we can help make it affordable for everyone in this nation to be able to get Health Care, check this site out.

DERELICT: 1: abandoned especially by the owner or occupant: run down 2: lacking a sense of duty: neligent

An Advance of Your Paycheck

********************THIS IS A PAYPERPOST AD**************************************

Have you ever been a little short of money and payday is four days away? You sure could use that paycheck now. I remember those days very well. I ate a lot of peanut butter sandwiches. But there is help out there to get you to that payday.
If you need a loan on your paycheck ahead of time check out payday cash loan. Sometimes all you need is that little extra to help make it through. Payday cash advances will help.
It's easy and fast, get a Fast Payday Loan, just go to the site and fill out a simple form and you could be spending that money before you know it. Sometimes you need that little extra to pay some of those bills and your payday doesn't always work out with the correct dates so you could use Payday Cash Advance Loans

W. on Katrina

Everyone is upset that W. didn't mention Katrina or New Orleans in his State of the Union address. I would get upset, but I'm not surprised. In W's world, anything that doesn't reflect good on him is forgotten as soon as possible. He brings up 9/11 as much as possible, it's one of the last times that many people think he acted presidental (I won't comment here or this post would get really long). But why should he mention Katrina? Everything about it was a black eye for him. He showed how inept he really is. And even more is coming to life. The former head of FEMA Michael Brown has said that comments were made that Katrina was a perfect chance to basically put a "white, female, Democrat Governor" in her place. Politics as ususal for W and his crew.

Supernatural Again

I just finished watching the final episode of the first season. Of course it ends on a cliffhanger. I haven't watched any of the new episodes from this season yet. But I thought I'd post the picture of the car. It's a '67 Chevy Impala. Nice looking car.

AGLOCO

I recently joined AGLOCO because of a friend recommended it to me. I am now promoting it to you because I like the idea and I want you to share in what I think will be an exciting new Internet concept.

AGLOCO’s story is simple:

Do you realize how valuable you are? Advertisers, search providers and online retailers are paying billions to reach you while you surf. How much of that money are you making? NONE!

AGLOCO thinks you deserve a piece of the action.

AGLOCO collects money from those companies on behalf of its members. (For example, Google currently pays AOL 10 cents for every Google search by an AOL user. And Google still has enough profit to pay $1.6 billion dollars for YouTube, an 18-month old site full of content that YouTube’s users did not get paid for!

AGLOCO will work to get its Members their share of this and more.

AGLOCO is building a new form of online community that they call an Economic Network. They are not only paying Members their fair share, but they’re building a community that will generate the kind of fortune that YouTube. But instead of that wealth making only a few people rich, the entire community will get its share.

What's the catch? No catch - no spyware, no pop-ups and no spam - membership and software are free and AGLOCO is 100% member owned. Privacy is a core value and AGLOCO never sells or rents member information.

So do both both of us a favor: Sign up for AGLOCO right now! If you use this link to sign up, I automatically get credit for referring you and helping to build AGLOCO.

The Tube

I just discovered this blog GOING UNDERGROUND. It's about the the subway system in London, which they call the Tube. When I was in England I loved taking the Tube. It was inexpensive and it got me anywhere I needed to go in London. Yea, you have to study the map and figure out some transfers between lines to get someplaces, but once you got it down it was great. This looks like a fun blog to check out.

"What Are You Doing With That Camera?"

3 New CDs

Over the weekend I ended up at Borders where I purchased three new cds. I like Borders because I can ususally find some cds there that Walmart or Best Buy isn't going to carry. The only thing I don't like is that there prices are not the same as Walmart or Best Buy. The three cds I got were:

Neko Case: Live on Austin City Limits - I already have the dvd of this show and I loved the show, so of course I'm going to love the cd.

Carrie Rodriquez: Seven Angels on a Bicycle - I've been looking for this cd for awhile now and could never find it. I was going to order it over the internet but decided I'd wait till I checked out Borders. I'm glad I waited since I was able to find it there. Great cd, Carrie has a great voice.

Alice Peacock: Who I Am - I have to thank someone for reccommending this one to me, but the problem is I don't remember who it was. It was on someone's blog that I read about her and decided I wanted to check her out. I like her cd a lot, so whoever you were out there thank you. If it was you leave me a message...

State of DisUnion

We are not the first to come here with government divided and uncertainty in the air. Like many before us, we can work through our differences, and achieve big things for the American people. Our citizens don't much care which side of the aisle we sit on - as long as we are willing to cross that aisle when there is work to be done. Our job is to make life better for our fellow Americans, and help them to build a future of hope and opportunity - and this is the business before us tonight.

Yeah, now let's work together. When the Repubicans controlled Congress it was a different matter. The Republicans all but ignored their Democratic counterparts. At some meetings the Republicans would actually get up and leave when the Democrats came in. Or tell them the wrong times for committee meetings. There was great article in a recent issue of Rollling Stone on this subject.

First, we must balance the federal budget. We can do so without raising taxes. What we need to do is impose spending discipline in Washington, D.C. We set a goal of cutting the deficit in half by 2009 - and met that goal three years ahead of schedule. Now let us take the next step. In the coming weeks, I will submit a budget that eliminates the federal deficit within the next five years. I ask you to make the same commitment. Together, we can restrain the spending appetite of the federal government, and balance the federal budget.

Remind me again...wasn't the Federal Budget balanced when W. took over office? Who has run it into the trillions? All within less than eight years?

Spreading opportunity and hope in America also requires public schools that give children the knowledge and character they need in life. Five years ago, we rose above partisan differences to pass the No Child Left Behind Act - preserving local control, raising standards in public schools, and holding those schools accountable for results. And because we acted, students are performing better in reading and math, and minority students are closing the achievement gap.

How well has the No Child Left Behind actually worked? Yeah, that's what I thought.

A future of hope and opportunity requires that all our citizens have affordable and available healthcare. When it comes to healthcare, government has an obligation to care for the elderly, the disabled, and poor children. We will meet those responsibilities. For all other Americans, private health insurance is the best way to meet their needs. But many Americans cannot afford a health insurance policy.

Health care plan? A tax cut? Is the answer to all the problems a tax cut? That seems to be his cure all for everything. Could it be that he thinks the magic word tax cut will make people happy and forget what a poor job he is doing?

Extending hope and opportunity in our country requires an immigration system worthy of America- with laws that are fair and borders that are secure. When laws and borders are routinely violated, this harms the interests of our country. To secure our border, we are doubling the size of the Border Patrol - and funding new infrastructure and technology.

Throw a bag over Lady Liberty's head, we don't want any more of those foreigners coming into this country. Don't they know America is for Americans. And we all came from native Americans, none of us were from another country.

Extending hope and opportunity depends on a stable supply of energy that keeps America's economy running and America's environment clean. For too long our Nation has been dependent on foreign oil. And this dependence leaves us more vulnerable to hostile regimes, and to terrorists - who could cause huge disruptions of oil shipments .... raise the price of oil ... and do great harm to our economy.

Worrying about America's enviroment from a President that has voted down most laws having to do with any type of enviromental safeguards and who thinks Global Warming a fantasy.

This war is more than a clash of arms - it is a decisive ideological struggle, and the security of our Nation is in the balance. To prevail, we must remove the conditions that inspire blind hatred, and drove 19 men to get onto airplanes and come to kill us.

I agree with that statement, the problem is that we are creating the conditions that inspire blind hatred and will drive millions more men to try and come up with new ways to kill us.

These are just some of the exerpts from W.'s state of union speech. I was going to take more points, but I find I just can't continue reading it. Some people live in their own little world and reality doesn't have to touch them. It just touches the rest of us.

Out Today: John Mellencamp's "Freedom's Road"

"Our Country"

"Our Country"

Written by John Mellencamp

Well I can stand beside
Ideals I think are right
And I can stand beside
The idea to stand and fight
I do believe
There’s a dream for everyone
This is our country

There’s room enough here
For science to live
And there’s room enough here
For religion to forgive
And try to understand
All the people of this land
This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

That poverty could be
Just another ugly thing
And bigotry would be
Seen only as obscene
And the ones that run this land
Help the poor and common man
This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

The dream is still alive
Some day it will come true
And this country it belongs
To folks like me and you
So let the voice of freedom
Sing out through this land
This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

ROCK N ROLL HISTORY

The 1955 hit "Ain't That A Shame," covered by Pat Boone and later by Cheap Trick, was originally played by what legend?

Yesterday's answer: London, England

WORD A DAY

BURGEON: 1a: to send forth new growth (as buds or branches): sprout b: to bloom 2: to grow and expand rapidly: flourish

"Burgeon" comes from the Middle English word burjonen, which is from Anglo-French burjuner, both mean "to bud or sprout." "Burgeon" is often used figuratively.

Duh!

Ok, sometimes I'm a little slow. I just put two and two together and they came up to be four. I mentioned in an earlier post about all the protestors around the clinic and wasn't sure why there were so many more than normal. Than in another post I mentioned that it was Pro Choice Day and the anniversary of Roe v Wade. Really, it wasn't until today, driving home from work that a little lightbulb went off over my head and I went Duh! That's why there were so many protestors out there, it was the anniversary of Roe v Wade.

Like I said, sometimes I'm a little slow.

Supernatural

This has become another of my favorite shows on tv. I purchased the first season on DVD awhile back and now I try and watch an episode as often as I can before I go to sleep. I have the DVD in the player in my bedroom, so I can get comfortable and lay down and watch the show.

Supernatural is the story of two brothers, Dean and Sam Winchester, out fighting monsters as they search for their Father. Their Mother died when they were young and they were raised as Monster Hunters. Each episode is a new adventure in a monster or other supernatural occurance.

But what makes this show is the relationship between the two brothers. As much as they argue and fight with each other they have a bond of love that comes through when it's needed. Their is a real chemistry between the two actors that play the brothers that comes across and helps make it more believable.

Like Buffy there is an overriding story arc to the entire season while the individual episodes tell their own stories.

Pro Choice Day

Blog for Choice Day - January 22, 2007

Okay, sometimes I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed. The post "Her Decision" was written because of this last weekend, like I describe it in the post. I had no idea today was Pro Choice Day, the 34th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade. I'm glad it could work out this way though.

Anyone Remember Quantum Leap?

I loved this show when it came on. The comic book lasted about a dozen issues and was published by Innovation Comics. This is the Christmas issue that I wrote. It was a play off of the Jimmy Stewart Christmas classic "It's A Wonderful Life." Each issue, like most of the episodes of the show, had to have a touch with the past, a little sidebar if you will about something that was going on in the time period that Sam had leaped into. Mine for this issue was actually two things, one I had Sam look at a 45 rpm of the Beatles "She Loves You" but as it was first issued on the Swan label before Capitol Records decided to distribute the group. And the second was the recall of Flubber. This was a toy based on the Disny movies, but the toy seemed to cause a lot of problems. I'll have to look up my information on Flubber, it was pretty interesting, they ended up having to bury it all in a dump site to get rid of it if memory serves me right.
I am fairly proud of this issue, I think the story turned out pretty good. I only have one copy of the comic left for myself, I've given so many out over the years.

Kind of Funny

Does anyone remember when we had one phone company for the entire country? Ma Bell covered it all. Than the Justice Department decided that was a monoply and broke the company up into all the smaller Baby Bells and spun off AT&T. Now Bell South is merging with AT&T. I just thought it was kinda funny.

Buffy and Her Friend Again

Another New Ringtone

I forgot to mention that the ringtone that I added to use for any calls that come through without their own ringtone but still with a caller id number is Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World." I think that is such a beautiful song.

Her Decision: WARNING! This Post May Be Upsetting For Some

She has to drive herself even though he said he would be there for her and they would go together so she didn't have to go through this by herself. She waited as long as she could, but couldn't wait any longer because her appointment was for one. Really she's not that surprised he didn't show. He hasn't shown himself much around here since she told him. But it would have been nice to have someone go with her. She's scared.

She tries not to cry on the ride to the clinic, but she can't help it. She's thought about this decision long and hard and to her it's the only choice she can make. It's not fair, but than what's happened isn't fair either. She keeps wiping at her eyes as she drives. Her hands shake as she takes them off the steering wheel to wipe at her eyes.

As she pulls up towards the street she sees a crowd in the street and the parking lot. This is just too much for her. She pulls the car to the side and just sits behind her steering wheel and cries. She is close enough to see the signs and the pictures they have on the signs. She feels sick. She wants to have the strength to continue and do what she knows she must, but she doesn't know if she can go through that crowd.

She's never felt more alone than at this moment.

This post might, no change that, this post will upset some people. I can't help it. This subject is probably one of the most emotional subjects in politics today. What am I talking about? Abortion. Anyone that doesn't want to read any farther feel free to excuse yourself now.

Saturday when I went over to visit my brother we drove over to Metairie to check out the book stores and CompUSA. To get to Borders we drive through the back roads and one road brings us past a clinic. Yes, one of those clinics. And in the street and the parking lot are a crowd of people with signs and little children and yelling and you know the drill.

I've driven this way plenty of times before and there are ususally a few people walking around outside the clinic with signs, but this time there had to be at least fifty people protesting. Adults with their children. I saw kids in strollers, kids that were just walking, kids older...all following behind a protesting Mommy or Daddy.

How could someone that needed to get to this clinic even get to the parking lot? It was chaos. I can't even begin to imagine what a young girl that has made what is probably one of the most difficult decisions of her life has to think when she gets to this clinic and has to basically fight her way to the front door.

Last time I looked abortion was legal in this country. I know protesting what you don't believe in is a time honored tradition and there is no shame in it, but this is going beyond simple protesting. They are trying to make it impossible for someone to get into the clinic.

Now I'm a man so I feel like I'm a little out of my depth in this arguement. Why should I be able to tell a woman what she can do with her body? What right do I have to tell her to have the baby, no matter what the consquences. I don't believe I do. It is her decision whether to have the abortion or not.

This issue hits so many hot points. The religious right have taken it as their ralling point. Supreme Court justices are decided on by whether if they'll overturn Roe vs. Wade. The basic premise of state and church being separate get a lot closer to each other when the subject is abortion. The religious right want to ban abortions because every life is sacred, but it supports the death penalty. I guess it gets to decide which life is worth saving or not.

I guess it depends on when you decide life begins. The anti abortion side wants to keep pushing that definition back, until it basically becomes life as soon as the sperm does its job.

I'm not talking about abortion as birth control. I really don't think that is as common as the anti abortion side tries to claim it is. They want to use a lot of scare tactics to make people think everyone that has an abortion is evil.

There are no easy answers, but the one answer I know is that if a woman wants to have an abortion that is her right and she should be able to and at the moment that is the law and she should not have to feel like a pariah to accomplish this.

Everyone should remember it's not their decision, it's not my decision, it's her decision.

WORD A DAY

QUODLIBET: 1: a philosophical or theological point proposed for disputaton; aslo: such a debate 2: a whimsical combination of familiar melodies or texts

The Latin quodlibet, meaning "any whatever," was the name given to debates over a minor philosophical or theological point. "Quodlibet" is a form of quilibet, from qui, meaning "what," and libet, "it please." We can't say with certainty how "quodlibet" went from disputations to light musical melanges, but English-speakers have been using the latter sense since the mid-19th century.

New Ringtones

I have to admit that I'm one of those geeks that love to have a bunch of different ring tones for different people. It helps when I hear a certain song I know who is calling. Plus it's just cool. The only problem I've ever had is that I can't download a lot of songs I want to use as ringers, Sprint only offers certain songs, of course no Will Hoge or Shannon McNally.

Well I purchased a software program called Xingtones, which is supposed to let you download any music you want to to your phone and use as a ringtone. And it actually worked. I had my doubts. So now I have Will Hoge, Shannon McNally, Susan Cowsill and some others downloaded to my phone to use as ringers.

Just really cool.

No Shame

The Saints lost to Chicago. Unfortunately the team did just not play up the level they've shown they are capable of. But there is no shame in their loss. They've provided a lot of hope to this city and they went out striving for their goal. Even though they lost they went out as winners.

An Old Picture

Just found this picture on the computer. It's from Christmas three years ago, when my parents still lived down here. Yes, that's me trying to look cool.

150 Posts In One Month!

I never thought I'd see that. With over a week left in the month I have made 150 posts. At the start of the month I came out like gangbusters and thought if I continued this trend I would make over 300 posts. Well, that's not going to happen, but still whatever I end up with is going to be a lot considering my first two years of blogging I only made it to 386 at the most. I'm almost at half that number now.

Will I be able to continue it? I have doubts if I can keep at quite this level. I've noticed the last half of this month I've slowed down a lot in the posting. Some days it's hard to find time to post. Making it a point to post everyday with the WORDS A DAY and ROCK N ROLL HISTORY has helped, it's made me sit down and make sure I post at least once day.

None of this really matters to anyone but the geek in me, feel free to ignore this post if you want.

Half Time

The Bears are over the Saints 16 - 7 at Half Time. The Saints made some mistakes the first half, didn't play as good as they should until the last minutes of the Half. Than they drove down and scored and kept themselves in the game.

Changes...again

Been playing with the sidebar again. I've added a few things here and there. But the biggest change has been to the music. It seems a lot of people don't like to hear music jump out at them as they land on a new site. Also I don't think many peole realized that there were four songs on the jukebox, most only heard the Bruce Springsteen song. So I've dropped the jukebox format and the automatic start for the music. I've added control bars for the songs on the sidebar. None of them start automatically, so if you want to listen to a song you have to click on the controls. I figure I'll change the songs every so often. The songs there now are:

Wilco: Sunken Treasures
Will Hoge: Rock and Roll Star
Bruce Springsteen: My City of Ruins
John Hiatt: Drive South Live

Also added a box for Yesterday's Top 5 links from this site, so you can see what everyone was looking at the day before.

Hope everyone likes the new changes.

Lest We Forget

This is why the Saint's win means so much to this city. These pictures were not taken after the hurricane, they were taken within the last month. This is from the Lakeview section, one of the better sections in the city. This is just a reminder that there is still a long ways to go for New Orleans.

Saints vs. Bears

Tommorrow is the Big Game. This is the farthest the Saints have ever made it in the playoffs. This city is going crazy already, if they win tommorrow it will be insane. It's hard to describe how much this means to the city. During the game New Orleans will come to a stand still. Stores will be empty, streets deserted...everyone will be inside somewhere watching the game. If the Saints win I have to go back to work. We have the Conference Championship shirts and we'll be selling them as soon as the game ends if the Saints win. It'll be crazy, but fun. We did this a few years ago when LSU won the college title. It was fun, handing out shirts to fans.

So here's to good luck for the Saints and a win tommorrow.

Time For Your Review At Work?

******************************THIS IS A PAYPERPOST AD*******************************

As a boss one of the things that can be so time consuming is reviews. I want to be fair to every associate and give them the best review I can. You want to make sure you cover as much and as fairly as possible about their work for the past year. Now there's software out there that can help with this. It helps keep track of each associate's accomplishments during the year, as well as any incidents that occured.

Who Will Run?

2008 will be here before you know it and we'll be electing a new President. Thank God! But who will we be electing. The Demos two front runners at the moment are Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. John Edwards is running close behind these two. All three have strong points and some weakness. I'm not sure Hillary could really win. She polarizes the country so much. Those that don't like her, just don't like her, they hate her. And I'm not sure the country would elect a woman President. Now I'm not saying we shouldn't. I would vote for her, but I don't know if the majority of the country would. And that's one of the problems I think Barack has. No, not that he's a woman, but that I don't know if this country would vote a black man for President. Both of these front runners have to face these issues, I would hope that the country could and would get past them, but honestly I'm not sure it would.

Still I think there is one front runner that a lot of people are forgetting about. He actually hasn't said he is running. Al Gore. In the last four years he has made an astounding recovery in the stiff, unblinking autotran that a lot of people looked at him as. He actually has already won once, even though he didn't get the job.

I think Al Gore has the best chance of winning.

ROCK N ROLL HISTORY

Bonnie Riatt had a hit with the song "Thing Called Love" but it was written by what singer/songwriter?

Yesterday's answer: Donovan

WORD A DAY

CORUSCATE: 1: to give off or reflect light in bright beams or flashes: sparkle 2: to be brilliant or showy in technique or style

"Coruscate" developed from the Latin coruscare, which means "to flash." That word also gave us the noun "coruscation" ("glitter, sparkle") and the adjective "coruscant" ("shining, glittering"), long before "coruscate" was even a glimmer in English-speaker's eyes (it first appeared in English prose in the 18th century).

Alarm Call

One in the a.m. and I get an alarm call to go out to the store. The police are waiting for me when I get there. The cleaning crew is inside. The problem is that the cleaning crew do not speak English. False alarm though, so that is good. I get to go back home.

Optics

***********************THIS IS A PAYPERPOST AD********************************

Don't you hate it when you're stuck up in the nose bleed section for that great concert you've been waiting months to see? All you can see on the stage are these little figures running around and jumping up and down. What you need are a pair of binoculars so you can see these figures up close and personal.

OpticsPlanet.net offers a huge selection on binoculars with huge discount prices. And for any order over @29.95 you get free UPS shipping. Now that right there can save you a few dollars.

Of course with a name like OpticsPlanet they carry more than just binoculars. Need a pair of sunglasses to keep that glare from the sun out of your eyes? You can get it here. Want to watch the stars? Get that new telescope here. Need some flashlights? You can get it all here.

All brand names are featured at PlanetOptics.net. No off brand stuff here, just the good stuff.

Next Friday

Next Friday night is Jeff Tweedy at the House of Blues. Jeff is the leader of Wilco for those that aren't fans of the group. Every so often he goes on a solo tour with just him and his guitar. He just released a DVD of one of these tours. Wilco is one of my favorite groups, so I can't wait to see him on his own.

Last Night's Concert of Alejandro Escovedo

I actually tried to post this last night after I got home from the concert, but my connection with the internet was not working. (Wonderful Charater Communications.) And than today I went across the lake to see my brother. But now I'm finally ready to post about last night's concert.

In simple words: wow!

This was a great concert. It was a simple concert. Alejandro and just one other man, both playing acoustic guitar. The stage was set up with two chairs for the two men to sit and play. The area in front of the stage was set up with chairs for the auidence to sit in. This was a new one for me, normally there are no chairs. We managed to snag two seats in the front row center. Pays to get there early.

Alejandro has a wonderful, emotional, booming voice. It does not seem that voice could come from the skinny little body that it does. The music these two men created was awesome. They created a lot of noise from just two guitars. I'm sorry but I don't remember the name of the man that played with Alejandro, but he was very talented. He made that guitar do things that was simply amazing.

Between songs Alejandro told stories of his life, of his songs, of his parents. He told a long story of the life of his father that led into another song. Alejandro's song look so simple but are so complex, they tell of life and love and life and death.

I sat in rapt fascination as Alejandro sang his songs. The two hours passed by so quickly. This concert ranks up as one of my favorites.

Alejandro Escovedo's Set List

New Monitor

My old monitor went the way of all things made of flesh...whoops, it wasn't made of flesh, was it? Well, it went the way of all things made of plastic and electronics. Which means it went away a lot faster than things of the flesh. Nowdays electronics aren't made to last. Throw it away and buy a new one. Well, that's what I did. The new one is an HP Photosmart/All-In-One. My old one was an earlier version of the all in one model. Now it's time for me to go bury the old one and say the last rites.

Need A Car?

****************************THIS IS A PAYPER POST AD**********************************

I don't know about you, but I hate shopping for a car. It's such a pain. And dealing with the salesmen...don't get me started. Plus trudging from one car dealer to another, trying to find something you like and something in your price range. It can be a pain. You can try the classifieds, but it's hard to tell what the car really looks like from the description, no one ever claims to have an ugly car.

Well, there is a better way.

LemonFree.com works like the classified ads but better. They have pictures of all the cars right there for you to see. Here is how they describe it:

LemonFree is a free automobile classifieds service. It comes with a built-in search technology which allows you to quickly locate a new or used automobile within your state/province and even city. You can post your new or used vehicle within minutes and have it appear with our search results until it has sold at absolutely no cost to you.

The best part is that it's free! It's free to post if you have a car you're trying to get rid of and it's free to search for your dream car. I put in the details for my dream car (mmmm, a corvette) and got multiple listings for it in the state of Louisiana.

Check out these cars:

Toyota Camry
Toyota Tundra
Dodge Ram
Ford Focus

Well, you get the idea. I could post cars all day.
The site has a section to tell you what not to do when trying to buy a car, so you don't get ripped off. It's set up to help you buy that car and not have any problems.

Check them out.

Used Cars

New Tenant

Check out the new blog in the upper left side of my sidebar. It's AEOWOLF ONLINE. I'll let him tell you what it's about: "My Irregular Ramblings, Random Irritations and Joys, Links and other stuff I find trawling life real and virtual...."

From what I've seen of it so far it's good so go check it out and tell him I sent you.

ROCK N ROLL HISTORY

The mystical folk-rock title song from the 1968 record Hurdy Gurdy Man reached #5 for what British artist?

Yesterday's answer: Bad Company

WORD A DAY

RAMIFY: to branch out

"Ramify" came into English in the 15th century as an offshoot of ramus, the Latin word for "branch." Another derivative is the now obsolete "ramage," meanint "untamed" or "wild," which originated in falconry as a word applied to young hawks that had begun to fly from branch to branch in trees. English acquired several scientific words from , including "biramous" ("having two branches"). "Ramify" itself started out as a scientific word, at first referring to branching parts of plants and trees and later to veins and nerves. But it soon branced out into nonscientific and even figurative uses, as in "ideas that ramify throughout society."

Tonight: Alejandro Escovedo

At the House of Blues Parish Room Alejandro Escovedo is playing tonight. This man is one of my favorites (yea, I know I have a lot of favorites). He started his career in a punk rock band called the True Believers and than went on to Rank and File for an album. After that he went solo and has been recording since. He's not real prolific, putting out less than a dozen albums in the last two decades. But the material he does put out is awesome. In the last few years he was diagnosed with Hepatitis C and has been battling that. As a musician he had no health coverage, so that has been a struggle in itself. He's doing better, last year he released a new cd "The Boxing Mirror" and is now on tour. His brother is a jazz drummer and his niece is Shelia E.

WORD A DAY

HYPNAGOGIC: adj: of, relating to, or occuring in the period of drowsiness immediately preceding sleep

"The hypnagogic state is that heady lull between wakefulness and sleep when thoughts and images flutter, melt, and transform into wild things," wrote Boston Globe correspondent Cate McQuaid (October 1, 1998). "Hypnagogic" derives from Greek hypn -, which means "sleep," and - agogos, meaning "inducing" (from agein, to lead). We borrowed the word from French hypnagogique in the late 19th century.

Absolute Watchmen

I just got my copy of the Absolute Watchmen in the mail today. If anyone knows anything about modern comic books, they know this is the top of the form. Time Magazine listed it as one of the 100 greatest works of fiction if I remember correctly. Watchmen was created and written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. It was a 12 issue mini series and than later collected into book form. Now it's been given the deluxe large hardback in a slipcase treatment. Also in the back is the original proposal Alan Moore presented to DC comics for the series. Unfortunately it doesn't have anything new by Alan Moore about the project since he and DC had a parting of the ways over the issue of Watchmen.

I'm glad that Amazon shrink wraps all the books it sends and than puts another piece of heavier shrink wrap around it inside the book. It's been raining here all day and the mail man put my package against the fence outside. The box the book came in almost literally fell apart in my hands when I picked it up. But I wasn't too worried, I've had a lot of stuff shipped from Amazon and after the first time I had a package left in the rain and freaked out to discover it completely dry I knew it should be fine. Only once have I got a package from Amazon that didn't survive the rain and when I contacted them they sent me a replacement copy with no problems

All I can say is this is a great comic and looks so good in this format. And at Amazon it was thirty dollars off the price I could get anywhere else.

ROCK N ROLL HISTORY

Rob Thomas co-wrote and sang lead vocals on Santana's 1999 #1 hit "Smooth" while he was the lead vocalist for what band?

Yesterday's answer: Bangles

WORD A DAY

DEASIL: clockwise

It is an old custom that you can bring someone good fortune by walking around him or her clockwise three times while carrying a torch or candle. In Scottish Gaelic, the word deiseil, is used for the direction one walks in such a luck-bringing ritual. English-speakers modified the spelling to "deasil" and have used the word both as the name of the clockwise charm and for the direction one walks when working it.

Again

Liz was smart enough to explain to me what the problem was in my link names not showing up on my 13. I was using the same color text as the background, so they were there, just faded into all the orange. So I went back and changed the colors for the link names to blue. And screwed something up.

So if you tried to click on one of the links to listen to the music of said artist you probably got nothing, except for a few of them. I apologize.

This morning was spent going back, one by one, and hopefully getting it right. I've tested it all out and they all seem to be there and working. So hopefully if you want to hear a sample of the artist I talk about you can now.

Except (sigh) for Maria McKee. I didn't realize it until after seven or eight tries now, that her myspace page doesn't have any music on it. I guess I'll have to hunt for a page that I can link with her that actually showcases her music. She is worth hunting for and listening to. For awhile years back she was my favorite female singer.

Ok, now can we make up blogger and be nice. I won't say anything else bad about you if you just work with me for awhile.

Did You Forget To Send Your Mom A Birthday Card?

***********************THIS IS A PAYPERPOST AD**************************************

Have you ever had one of those days? You know, when you get home from work and sit down to watch tv you realize you've forgotten something. Today is your Mom's birthday and you forgot to send her a birthday card. What can you do? There's no way you can get one to her in time now. Or is there?

Go to Yahoo! Greeting and you can send her a card as fast you can pick it out. And they have a great selection of cards too, covering every sort of occasion you can think of. A birthday coming up, a holiday, someone having a baby, or you just want to send some comforting words to someone that needs them...they have a card for all of that and more.

Plus they have those neat cards that are animated. They have cards that sing, laugh, dance and do all sorts of amazing things. You can personalize every card you send, with the name of the person you're sending it to plus your own and you can leave a nice personal message to the recipient.

And if you forgot to mail that card you can send an e-card right away, that day. Plus there are no mailing cost, no stamps, no trips to the post office. Right now you can get a free 30 day trial offer. A yearly subscription where you can send as many cards as you want in that year is only $13.99.

Also if you want to send those Christmas cards out and hate all the writing them out to everyone you can do it with e-cards too. It'll save even more time from stamps and trips to the post office.

greetings

More Fun With Blogger

I've just spent the last hour trying to get my Thursday Thirteen posted. The bad thing is that I had it done yesterday and saved in draft mode. But it has just been crazy trying to post it. It's taken three trys and the last hour but it's finally up. The links to each artist's site is there, right under the description. I can't see them unless you move your mouse over them and than their name appears and if you click on it, it'll bring you to their myspace page and you can hear some of their music. I hope everyone likes this one, because I had to work hard to get it done.

13 Artists That Deserve Wider Recognition

Thirteen Artists That Deserve To Be Bigger Number #11

There's a lot of good singers and groups out there that deserve to better known. There's an awful lot of talent out there that nobody gets a chance to hear. Here is my bit to try and help that matter. These 13 are musical acts that I think should be bigger than they are. I've included a link to their myspace or home page where you can check out their music if you're so inclined.

1. Will Hoge - I've talked about this singer quite a big. He's one of my favorite performers, period. He sings with a passion that is sadly lacking in many of today's bigger names. And it's nice to see someone with a real sense of the history of the music.
Will Hoge

2. Shannon McNally - Another one of my favorites. Just to warn everyone there will be quite a few from New Orleans on this list. Shannon is another that is not willing to sell out to become a big name. She describes her music as North American Ghost Music.
Shannon McNally

3. Theresa Anderson - Another New Orleans favorite. I just did a Spotlight On her, so there's not much more I can say here.
Theresa Anderson

4. Irene Sage - Again we have a New Orleans musician. Irene sings the blues and rock as well as anything she tries her hand at.
Irene Sage

5. Grayson Capps - Can you believe it? We have another one from New Orleans. Actually Grayson lives in Tennessee now, he moved there after Katrina and had decided to stay there. But his heart and music still resides in the crescent city. His Dad wrote the book that the movie "Love Song For Bobby Long" Check it out for cameos from him doing music and Theresa Anderson is there too singing.
Grayson Capps

6. Neko Case - Neko is probably one of the better known of all these singers I'm writing about here. Critically she is a hit, but she still hasn't made the move to the bigger leagues. Neko's voice has been compared to that of Patsy Cline. She has a voice that has to be heard.
Neko Case

7. Marah - A band from Philly. This is one of my favorite bands. I saw them live and they were great, the only drawback was that there wasn't more than fifty people in the audience. It was great for us, but I think they would probably like more people listening to them. Stephen King agrees with me, last year he named their cd from that year the best music of the year.
Marah

8. Alejandro Escovedo - This man has been around forever, starting with the True Believers to singing solo now. No Depression named him the best singer of the Decade, that's how good this guy is. And this Friday I get to go see him live.
Alejandro Escovedo

9. Lori McKenna - I'm hoping she gets better known thanks to Faith Hill. Three songs from Faith's last cd were written by Lori. This woman absolutely is outstanding.
Lori McKenna

10. Hold Steady - Just wrote about them. A great rock and roll band singing about real people.
Hold Steady

11. Susan Cowsill - If you thought we were done with the local artists you were wrong. Susan's singing career began when she was just a child with her family, The Cowsills. They were the inspiration for the Partridge Family tv show. Now please don't ask who the Partridge Family was.
Susan Cowsill

12. Maria McKee - Originally the lead singer of a group called Lone Justice. People thought that this band was going to be big, but they never made it. A great singer with a great voice.
Maria McKee

13. Carrie Rodriguez - She started playing fiddle with Chip Taylor and than singing with him and now has moved on to solo work.
Carrie Rodriquez

A Different Type of Spam

I've found a sure fire way to tell if someone is a snob or not. I was somewhere once with some people that had money (I was the odd ball out) and somehow they got the discussion turned to Spam. Now I just had a sandwich of Spam tonight. These people were all nice people but when they started talking about Spam they couldn't understand how people ate it. Now they've never tasted it, so they don't know if it's terrible or good. They just associate Spam with people below their level. 'm not going to try and say Spam is the best thing out there, but I like a sandwich of it now and than. I'm not saying if you hate Spam you're a snob. You can hate it. But hopefully at least you've tasted it and you don't just assume Spam is the meat of trailer trash poor.

Me and Blogger

I've slowed down the posting a bit, partly because work has been getting busier and I've just been kind of blah about things lately. I've still got that post about the meaning behind the name of my blog and some other posts I've been thinking about, but when it comes time to sit down and actually type something up I can't summon up enough enthusiasm to type the words. I think it's just being more tired than normal.

That and Blogger. I have had more trouble with Blogger lately. Trouble posting pictures. Now I'm having trouble with my layout. When I go the layout to add new things the ADD A PAGE box doesn't even show. So it's kind of hard to add something when I don't have the correct tools.

I keep reading about all the people that leave blogger for other sites and up till now I've never considered it. I expect a few bugs now and than, but this is starting to get stupid. And than trying to find an email address to mail Blogger with my concerns and problems...I'm still looking.

And as a side note, I'm not too happy with PayPerPost either. I made a post on the ninth of this month about HP printers. It's been on my site now for however many days that is, and when I check on the status of this post with them it's still pending. How long do they keep up a post that is advertising their product as pending? What happens if they reject it and I've had it up for a month or whatever, advertising their product and than I get nothing, that doesn't seem too fair. And they are another site that is hard to find someone to communicate with.

Also while I'm complaining I should make note of the other pay site I've joined, LoudLaunch. Everytime I go there to try and find something to post about their ad budgets are halted. Get some more ads, more money for the ads, but if you want to grow as a blogger pay site, it's going to be hard when no one can blog about your advertisers.

I think the internet world is just kicking my butt right now and I can't seem to fight back.

I haven't left blogging and don't plan to, I still enjoy it and I plan to get back into the swing of things soon.

WORD A DAY

SOIDISANT: self-styled, co-called.

"Soi-disant," which in French means literally "saying oneself," is one of hundreds of French terms that entered English in the 18th century, during the period known as the Enlightenment. Even as political antipathies between France and England were being played out on the battlefields in Europe and America, English speakers like Lord Chesterfield were peppering their correspondence with French. "Soi-disant" first began appearing in English texts in 1752 as a disparaging adjective for those who style or fancy themselves in some role.
