The Dresden Files
The book I bought yesterday was PROVEN GUILTY by Jim Butcher. It is the newest in a series. The main character of the series is Harry Dresden. Harry is a P.I. in Chicago. The main difference between Harry and most other P.I.s is that Harry is also a wizard. The character of Harry is compared to Jim Rockford from the tv show quite a lot in the reviews.
The Sci Fi channel has adapted the books to tv. The above picture is of Harry and Bob. They continue the connection to Rockford with the title of the series, The Dresden Files...after the Rockford Files.
This is the first in the series I've read. I'm about half way through it now and loving it. I know I'm going to have to go back and start with the first book and read them all now. It's one of those series that mixes reality with magic and does a good job of it. But what keeps the book pages turning is the character of Harry Dresden. He's a guy just trying to do what's right and help people, but always seems to be caught in the middle of some trouble.
Kind of like another P.I. named Rockford.

I've heard of this author and these books. I need to check them out.
If you listen to the Butcher Block podcast (by the author and one of his friends), it recommends starting with the later titles (e.g Death Masks) then going back to the earlier ones - most appear to be self-contained stories anyway (only the last three or four are part of some bigger arc). Just my two cents :-)
