The newest Doc Ford novel, Dark Light, by Randy Wayne White is out in paperback. I can't afford to get all these books in hardback, most times I wait for most novels to come out in paperback and than grab them.
Doc Ford is a marine biologist living on a small island off the coast of Florida. Once upon a time he was a CIA agent, sent to other countries to do a lot of dirty work. To me the Doc Ford novels are the closest to the Travis McGee novels by John D. MacDonald. Now to me that is high praise. Travis McGee is one of the greatest creations in literature as far as I'm concerned. The characters has some similarites, they both live in Florida, they both have a eccentric best friend, but to me the Doc Ford novels have the same spirit of the Travis McGee novels. Ford is a man molded after McGee, he has the convictions that moved McGee. He has the same spirit. These two series are nothing alike for the most part, it's just when I read Doc Ford I feel McGee looking over my shoulder and nodding his head in approvement.
