Why I Hate American Idol Sometimes

American IdolImage via WikipediaI've got the tv on as I type these words and American Idol is on before I stop to watch the two hour premium of Lost. Of course they're showing singers that are so bad and than making fun of them, something I think is terrible. These people are putting their hopes and dreams up there in front of millions of people and they get made to be a laughing stock. Than I heard a voice that I could see singing bluegrass or old type country music, he had that high keening voice and after he finished the judges basically said he was terrible. That's what I truly hate about American Idol, they are looking for just one type of singer in effect and anyone that doesn't fit into their mold isn't going to make it. I'd love to hear a Bob Dylan or someone else with a unique voice on the show. But it isn't going to happen. As much as I like some of the winners, they all fit into a mold.

I just like to watch when it gets down to actual contestants. They have produced some great talent, Carrie Underwood for instance.

You're right. That's usually when I watch it, every time I happen to watch it early it just makes me mad.

They are actually better this year with not showing the train wrecks ... some of these people are delusional and family members do not help, like that first girl who could not sing yet her parents tell her she sings like an angel.

I did think that one guy would be good for bluegrass and the like and they could have just said that, but of course ratings are important.

What did you think of the 2-hour LOST? I love the show

I also know what you and CWM are talking about...but without watching the early shows I might not have been mesmerized by Taylor hicks and his audition. Last night a guy did the same song "A change is gonna come" and he was good, but no where near as good as Taylor.

That's why I continue to watch the early shows even though I complain about them. I want to see the good auditions. Last year Kristy Lee Cook's audition of "Amazing Grace" was to put it simply amazing. It was probably her best performance the entire time she was on AI. I'd like to see more of that, see the ones that they turned down that were good and let us wonder if they made a mistake.

Like, and I know I could keep coming up with examples, there was that one girl from Kentucky that sang and she was bad. Just flat and out of tune, not screeching bad. But the judges acted like it was supposed to be a joke, asking her if it was all a joke. You could see the pain in her face as she listened to these judges basically belittle her. That's what I don't want to see. Just tell her no, you're not good enough, next.

And I LOVED the two hour LOST. I love LOST. I just bought Season 4 on DVD. I don't know if I want to just watch season 4 or go back to the start and watch all four seasons. I know when it's finally over I want to start with season one and watch to the end.

I'm disappointed in AI so far this season, and have, almost, given up on the early rounds. I think they are showing a lot of crap, the San Francisco show was horrible! I didn't watch all of last night b/c I wanted to see the Lost recap, but it seemed like when I flipped over, it was pretty decent (the girl who had a failed record contract, the guy who sang Bad Company, the one who covered Gavin Degraw, the girl at the end...). But they are putting through a lot of bad people... the bikini girl?!

On to better things - LOST WAS GREAT!! John, you have to post on that so we can all discuss. So many more questions, love it!!

Bluegrass guy was not bad but they are looking for Pop. They won't ever veer to far a field from that.

And AH HAH! Vinny Bond is watching Idol!!

I liked change is gonna come boy too, but so far there is no David Cook for me this year.

I think they've shown less of the real train wrecks this time around, and more of the ones that they are putting through to Hollywood. That's why I continue to turn it on.

But the mute button is nearby and a the first bad note, I mute.

I'm with Vinny though, if I hadn't watched the early rounds in 2006 I wouldn't have been grabbed by Taylor from the first note.

You know that's the only season I watched faithfully, the one where Taylor won. Overall I thought they had some really strong talent. Since then I watched it off and on. If I remember it's on I try to watch, but I don't go out of my way to watch it. And I haven't been that excited about any of the winners since.
