End of the Month: Will Hoge

It's been evident that I haven't been a constant source of blogging this month. Anyone that's been reading my blog for any amount of time knows the reasons why so I'm not going to go into them again, but I've felt bad that the month I pick to showcase Will Hoge and I'm slack about getting posts about him on here. Will deserves to be a star and a Big One. He's that good. He has a new album coming out from a major label this Fall, so hopefully they'll get behind him and give him the promotion that he deserves to break into that next level. I'll miss seeing his at the small clubs and the chance to go up to him after the show and talk, but I'd love to see him playing bigger events and making more money and just being a bigger presence in the music industry. The industry needs people like him, that are committed to the music and know their history of where the music comes from. The month that Johnnie Johnson, the pianist for a lot of Chuck Berry's earliest hits, died I was surprised when I was at a Will Hoge show and he talked about the man before launching into a Chuck Berry number. There are too many superstars out there performing today that would have no clue to who Johnnie Johnson is. It's not mandatory that every singer know every player that came before them, but it's nice that they have some sense of history and who helped pave the way for them to play on that stage today.

So for the next week I'm going to try and post a lot about Will Hoge. I've got a month's worth of pushing Mr. Hoge to squeeze into one week.

I agree that it's good to see artists who understand where the music comes from.

Like you say, they don't need to know every name. But they should understand the struggle that many artists have had to get their music heard.

I hope the era of cookie cutter singers will come to an end soon. It's not that they all make bad music...some of it is ok and worth hearing.
