Gary Friedrich has brought a lawsuit against Marvel Comics for the right to the character Ghost Rider. Friedrich is the first writer on the comic book created in the seventies. He is claiming he created the character before he went to work for Marvel Comics and Marvel failed to properly register the copyright to the character and it has now reverted back to him. Of course none of this would matter if the movie hadn't made a ton of money.

Everybody's out to make a buck. I don't begrudge royalties to an artist. In fact, as a writer myself, I insist that the artists get paid - it's the right thing to do.
But my question on this is, why wasn't it an issue well before the movie?
Exactly the point. It only becomes an issue when the movie makes a bunch of money. I agree with you, as a writer and a writer that had done some work in the comic book industry and hopes to do more, I think the creators deserve to get paid and to get their fair share, but the comic industry is one of the worst industries for creators. It's gotten better, but it's still pretty brutal.
