WORD A DAY

PECULATION: embezzlement

"Peculation" comes from Latin peculatus, which meant "misappropriation of property" and in turn dervied frm peculium, meaning "private property." Both sources belone to a family of Latin words having to do with property and possession. The most basic members of this Latin family of words are pecu ("cattle") and pecus ("livestock"), animals being a fundamental form of wealth in ancient societies. Other members of the family include pecunia ("money"), which gave English "pecuniary" ("monetary"), and peculiaris ('one's own, private, special"), which led to our "peculiar."
