CLICKIN ROUND THE WORLD

The first in a series, be sure to collect them all. Ok, right up front I should admit that I'm not all that comuter savy. Most of what I learn on here is thru trial and error. (And help from nice people like Skittles.) Everyone talks about their hits and can go and see who it is and all sorts of information about them. While I check out Goggle Analyticals and whatever it tells me in plain English is what I know. So one of the things it tells me is from where I'm getting hits from around the world. It has a map of the world with little dots from where I've gotten a hit, put the mouse over the dot and it tells you how many hits came from that area and where actually it is. It always astounds me from some of the places that have come and read my site. So in this post (and future ones) I want to take a moment and point out some of the more exotic locales that some of my visitors have come from.

And hey, if you're one of those vistors stop for a moment and say hi!

First up I found a vistor from Moka. I've never heard of this place. The spot showed was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, closer to the African coast. I figured it was a island. Well, it's actually a city on the island of Mauritius. The first people to land on the island were Arab sailors and merchants. In 1507 the Portugese seaman Fernandez Pereira found Mauritius and named it Cerne. The Portugese were never interested in settling the island, it was a means of protecting their trade routes to India. In 1598 the Dutch settled on the island and renamed it Mauritius, after Prince Mauritius of Nassau. The French ruled the island from 1767 to 1810. The British captured the island in 1810. In 1968 the island became independent.

One of its biggest claims to fame is that it was the home of the dodo bird. The name means dummy in Portugese. The last dodo was probably killed around the end of the seventeenth century.

Mauritius is a big vacation destination and cruise spot. It's a big area for tourism for Europeans and vacationers from the Indian subcontinent. The draw is the beaches, which are some of the best in the world.

The capital is Port Louis and this city is also the only port on the island. Not far from the capital city is the small town of Moka. It sits among the forested, craggy hillsides.
