REQUISITE: essential, necessary

To understand the etymology of today's word, you need to learn the Latin verb requirere, which means "to ask (again) for." Requirer in turn comes from quaerere, another good verb to add to your Latin vocabulary. It means "to seek" or "to inquire after," and it's the ultimate source for many words in English, including "inquire," "acquire," and the more recognizable "query." You might also want to know that "requisite" has been part of our language for a long, long time; it's earliest documented use dates from the 15th century.
