Thirteen Thursday Number 22: 13 Favorite Comic Book Writers

Thirteen Favorite Comic Book Writers Number #22

When most people think of comic books they probably think of the artists. And of course the artists are very important, it is a visual medium. But to me the writer has always been the one that I was most interested in. Of course it's probably because I fancy myself a writer. The writer creates the character, the story, the reason I want to revisit the comic book each month. These are thirteen of my favorite writers.

1. Stan Lee: Most of these writer will probably be unknown to most readers out there. Comic book writers aren't that well known. But if there is one writer that is known outside the comic book field, it's Stan Lee. Stan co-created the Marvel universe: Spider-man, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Daredevil and thousands of others. For me Stan showed me what truly made a hero. His characters stood up for the underdog, they had certain morals and would not betray them no matter what, they were true heroes and they made me realize what I should strive for.

2. Steve Gerber: In the 70's Gerber was the writer to read. His take on superheroes put a new spin on them with comics like the Defenders. But he reached his peak with Howard the Duck. If you only know this character from the movie you don't know the character. Howard was a satirical voice in the midest of all the spandex heroes.

3. Brian Micheal Bendis: Brain started off in the small indy market with titles like Jinx and than moved on to Marvel comics. I think his best work was his own creation Jennifer Jones in Alias comics. (Nothing to do with the tv series.) Brian has made a huge impact on the way comics are written nowdays. I love his dialouge. He writes Ultimate Spiderman and the Avengers titles.

4. Gilbert Hernadez: A star in the black and white indy field. He is also the artist of his own stories. I wanted to stay away from writer/artists, they are their own special category, but I couldn't not list him. He is the creator of the Palomar series.

5. Brain K. Vaughn: Creator of Ex Machina and Y: The Last Man. These are two of the best comics out there right now.

6. Robert Kirkman: Writer of The Walking Dead and Invincible among a lot of other comics. These are the two that I read by him. The Walking Dead is a zombie comic, but it's not a zomibe comic. It's a story about what happens to people when the world ends.

7. Roy Thomas: Roy took over most of Stan's books when Stan moved up in the Marvel company. Roy brought a different look to the Marvel heroes, but still kept what made them heroes.

8. Alan Moore: Perhaps one of the better known names outside comics today. Creator and writer of Watchmen, the ultimate super hero tale. He has also written V For Vendetta, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell and Lost Girls.

9. Neil Gamian: Writer and creator of the Sandman series.

10. Grant Morrison: Animal Man and The Doom Patrol.

11. Brian Wood: Writer of a great new series called DMZ.

12. Mike Baron: Writer of one of the best comics every published, Nexus.

13. Marv Wolfman: Another writer from the 70s, probably has written pretty much ever comic character out there, but really shined on the Teen Titans and what he is probably best known for, Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Great list. Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite writers. He's the reason I started collecting.
